[1] 1-628. 2fep. Original blue and cream/light brown multi lined checked cloth boards with black square on the front cover with the book title. Original spine very nicely relaid on blue leather with original book title laid down. Covers very slight fading and browning. Internally very slight age browning, as expected. Overall a very nice solid copy of the very scarce 1936 edition, first issue. NB: Some bibliographers state the first edition - first issue comes only in a yellow checked cover. This is not true. This copy in blue checked cover is the second one seen as well as one with a yellow cover, both true 1st editions, 1st issues with no further issued printing information. ITEM # 2. ENCLOSED: 290 x 195mm 1 sheet (2 pages) from the guest book kept by Rose Oller Harbaugh. She was the long-time popular manager of the book department of the large department store 'Marshall Fields' in Chicago. She often sponsored book signings and other literary events, keeping a guest book of visiting authors. This is one such page from the guest book, dated June to October 1945, featuring some of that year's best-selling authors, including Irma S. Rombauer. Her signed Autograph note states: "With many thanks to a fine woman/Mrs. Harbaugh. Fondly/Irma S. Rombauer".
- This edition is generally known as the 'First Trade Edition’ of 1936. Irma Rombauer, recently widowed, (her husband committed suicide) sunk half of her inheritance of $6000.oo into a self-published run of 3000 copies of the 1931 ‘family edition’ of the Joy of Cooking and gave them out to family, friends and acquaintances. Published by A.C. Clayton of St Louis (a company which had never published a book before but printed labels for fancy St Louis shoe companies and for Listerine). Eventually all 3000 copies were given away or sold. Encouraged by the response, Irma Rombauer, on May 1st, 1936, published the first ‘trade edition’ of the Joy of Cooking with Bobbs-Merrill Company - Indianapolis and New York. The larger 1936 edition contained 628 pages and copies published were: 1st printing - 10,000 of which a respectable 6,838 copies sold in the first 6 months. 2nd printing of 1938 – 10,000. 3rd printing of 1939 – 10,000. 4th printing of 1940 – 10,000. 5th printing of 1941 – 10,000. 6th printing of 1941 – 10,000. Between 1936 and the end of 1942 -- 52,151 copies of the first trade edition were sold. The 2nd edition of June 7th 1943 had an increased 884 pages and 167,261 copies were sold. The first trade edition pioneered a new recipe format: first a chronological listing of ingredients and then instruction for preparation, what we now know as 'action format'. Unfortunately, Irma signed a contract which assigned the copyright of both the 1931 and 1936 editions to Bobbs-Merrill, a situation that would in the years to come, badly strain both parties. Anne Mendelson author of 'Stand Facing the Stove' informs; The editions that mark genuine stages of the book's developement are eight in number: the original privately published 'Joy of Cooking' [1931], this Bobbs-Merrill edition [1936] the best-selling wartime edition [1943], the first postwar edition [1946], (actually printed from the 1943 plates with a very few changes), the first Rombauer-Becker edition [1951], the unauthorised edition [1962], the first authorised edition prepared by Irma's daughter, Marion (Rombauer) Becker [1963], and Marion's last revision [1975]. ITEM # 2. ENCLOSED: Including Rombauer's, there are in all 8 signatures. 2 unidentified signers on the front and verso of the one page. The other authors who expressed very nice sentiments to Rose Harbaugh are: A. Whitney (1903-2008) wrote over 76 books. more than 50 million copies in print in paperback alone. Ruth Hunter, a supporting actress in Broadway plays, portrayed Ellie Mae in the stage premier of Tobacco Road (1933). In 1945 she published a memoir, 'Come Back on Tuesday'. Russel A. Byrd a long haul bus driver for Greyhound, wrote about his experiences in 'Russ's Bus: Adventures of an American Bus Driver'. While this was a humorous book, Byrd also wrote about highway safety in 'Highway Killers and Driving to Live'. He was a leader of the National Drivers Association for the Prevention of Traffic Accidents. Aleksander Janta (1908-1974) was a Polish poet who published his first verses at age 20. He escaped from a German POW camp. After World War II, he emigrated to the US as a journalist, author, and cultural force in the Polish-American community. Harry J. Owen published a modern version of the ancient fable in 1945, 'The Scandalous Adventures of Reynard J. Fox', a story first published in Middle English by William Caxton, England's first printer. This is a very scarce copy of the 1st trade edition, made rare with the inclusion of the very unusually formatted page with rare signature of Irma Rombauer.

- This little thick tome is an unusual and very handsome edition of "the Joy of Cooking. A Running Press Miniature Edition, copyrighted 1997 by Simon & Schuster Inc. A real collectors item for a miniature or cookery book collection.

Internally clean however with some slight browning to Half title and title and last leaf. A nice copy of a scarce book.
- There is a little, amusing, early typewritten note tipped in that states; 'The poem is in Latin, with an English paraphrase, full of good sense. Our English restaurateurs might mark the following couplet, referring to the greatest deficiency of our restaurants: 'Tis the Desert that graces all the Feast, for an ill end disparages the rest.' William King (1663-1712), English poet and miscellaneous writer. He was educated at Westminster School under Dr Busby, and at Christ Church, Oxford. His first literary enterprise was a defense of Wycliffe, written in conjunction with Sir Edward Hannes (d. 1710) and entitled Reflections upon Mons. Vaiillas's History of Heresy.. . (1688). He became known as a humorous writer on the Tory and High Church side. His chief poems are: The Art of Cookery: in imitation of Horace's Art of Poetry. With some Letters to Dr Lister and Others (1708), one of his most amusing works; The Art of Love; in imitation of Ovid ... (1709); "Mully of Mountoun," and a burlesque "Orpheus and Eurydice." A volume of Miscellanies in Prose and Verse appeared in 1705; his Remains.. . were edited by J. Brown in 1732; and in 1776 John Nichols produced an excellent edition of his Original Works with Historical Notes and Memoirs of the Author (see item #11281 below). Dr Johnson included him in his Lives of the Poets, and his works appear in subsequent collections.

Fully bound in modern mid-brown calf, with 18th century style blind tooled panelled fillet on the boards with blind tooled line borders. Spine with raised bands and gilt lines, red label with gilt lettering. Internally extremely clean, as new. A rare item especially in this immaculate condition.
- Although no author is named on the title page, this is the first English translation of Menon's - La Cuisiniere Bourgeoise, originally written in French, and published in Paris, 1746. Maclean notes a 4th edition of 1796 with an altered main title, although sub-titles unchanged. Menon's books excite a lot of interest but nothing was known of him, till very recently; Sophie of Sophie Schneideman Rare Books had an early two volume set of 'La Cuisiniere Bourgeoise' dated 1752. This set was the author’s own copy, signed on the first page. It was the copy from the Chateau de Villiers library according to small pen inscriptions on each title and tiny stamps on the first blanks. The first blank of the first volume bears the remarkable history of the book, written in ink in 1875. The story it relates is that the first owner of the book was Mrs. Menon. It next passed to Margueritte Menon, her daughter, who was married to Claude Dodant. The next recepient of the set was Anne Dodant, wife of Henri de Villemenard. Their son Charles de Villemenard next owned it, there-after going to to Marie de Villemenard and finally to the author of the note, Villiers. The note is initialed and dated. Interesting; this is now the most up-to-date information on Menon. Perhaps with this little bit, further relevant information can be garnered in the future. His books in French and English are much sought after and constitute an important addition to any cookery book collection.

Internally very clean however some slight foxing on fep before title page and on frontispiece. A very good copy of a fairly scarce book.
- The illustrations are: The frontis drawn by Emma Soyer and engraved in steel by H.B. Hall and fifeteen wood engraved plates, two folding, including six plates illustrating elaborate dishes, and others showing the famous drawing of the Reform Club Kitchen, a table of a weathy family, Soyer's table at home, a drawing of two Bavarians by Emma Soyer and a self-portrait of Emma Soyer engraved in steel by H.B. Hall. There is also a folding plate on blue paper that is one of Soyer’s menus for a very special banquet at the Reform Club on July 3rd 1846 for 150 couverts that included the guest of honour - His Highness Ibrahim Pasha. It consisted of a massive 46 courses and on a spit in the dining room was a huge roasting Baron of Beef ala Anglaise. The dinner was a highlight of the Amir’s London visit. Four months earlier on March 22nd 1846, Ibrahim Pasha - His Highness, The Amir of Trans-Jordan came to London to sign a treaty with His Majesty The King in respect of the United Kingdom recognising the status of Trans- Jordan as a sovereign independent State. The menu was not in the first edition of 1846 but was in subsequent editions including this one here.

Housed in modern quarter dark tan and marbled boards slip-case, with gilt lines and tooling and gilt lettering. Internally very clean and tight with sometime past strengthening of the inside guttering. An extremely nice copy in this condition.
- Cagle, on pp 752, records an edition of 1858, unrecorded in other bibliographies. This edition of 1859 is a first also. Whether it is a 1st or 2nd issue is difficult to ascertain. The Preface is dated September 1858. Lacking any further information in the book or in Bitting or Axford, one might assume this is a first edition - 2nd issue. The spine and boards are in exceptional condition. The spine is filled with the original beautiful bright gilt figures and lettering. A large bright gilt ornament of the same quality is on the front cover. They are as good as new, thus the reason for the slip case.

A little wear to the boards, and very clean and crisp internally. Overall a handsome and very scarce set.
- Jean Baptiste Lefebvre de Villebrune's (1732-1809) effort at the first serious translation into French of Athenaeus's Greek classic about eating habits. Athenaeus [fl.3rd century], in particular, presents the Greek and Oriental kitchens in all their aspects, and with his marvelous erudition, proves himself a Burton of Gastronomy- the most accomplished Master of Feasts that antiquity has produced. The book is a symposium held by 21 artists, writers, musicians and surgeons, discussing all things, which according to Greek custom, should adorn a banquet. The names of the most famous gastronomes and of the most celebrated cooks are recorded. The virtues and qualities of wines are the subjects of long discourses. Table ornaments and decoration are also covered -- (Ben Kinmont. Cat.2. 2000.) Kinmont also notes that Lamy published another edition of 4 volumes only, in the same year, but with vingettes. This set, although five instead of four volumes, also has the beautiful vingettes. A very desirable set. A rare recording of gastronomic history.

8vo. Pp. Title Page. (i-x) 48pp 'Contents' (1-610) Fully bound in dark brown calf with blind tooled borders. Spine with raised bands, gilt lines and lettering and a red label. Internally quite clean and tight, however some slight foxing to first part of contents page and the title page is browned and slightly worn.
- The English translation of Menon's two works 'Les Soupers de la Cour' and 'La Cuisine Reformee'. 'Les Soupers de la Cour' was first published in 1755 and deals with dining at its most lavish, not only the grand banquets but also the smaller dinner party for twenty or thirty people, at which over a hundred dishes might be served in five courses. "Menon's book covers menus, hors d'oeuvres, entrees, and some desserts. An entire chapter is devoted to sherbets or ices and ice cream. Like Marin that other great contemporary of Menon's, both placed emphasis on their sauces. Menon's recipes were surprisingly varied, coming not only from France but Italy, Germany, Ceylon, and Flanders and used in everything from hors d'oeuvres to desserts."-- (Harrison, 'Une Affaire du Gout' 1983.) Bernard Clermont first published his English translation in 1767 under the title of 'The Art of Modern Cookery Displayed' The second English edition of 1769 had the same contents as the first but the title was changed to 'The Professed Cook'. For this third edition, however, Clermont added a considerable amount of material of his own with Menon's original work taking less of a prominent place on the title-page even though the complete text is still present. Of interest is the large number of ice cream recipes, such as; Cinnamon Ice, Ices of Coriander Seed, Aniseed and Junpiper Berries as well as a very unusual selection of Iced Cheeses. A fine translation of two of the great early French culinary classics.

Page corners rounded. Full dark brown modern calf with blind tooling to boards and spine with brown label and gilt lettering. New end papers.
- Although Tryon did not put his name nor date on this book it is easy to place it due to the declaration on the title page -- 'being an Appendix to the Book entitled , The Way to Health, & or, a further demonstration of Philosophy therein contained----'. The 1st edition of The Way to Health is 1683. Oxford states 'n/d' for the 1st edition of The Good Houswife, with a 2nd of 1692 on which Tryon's name first appears. Assuming Tryon took five years to write this supplement, we can place it's date at circa 1688. Tryon was a prolific writer of books on food and diet and also advocated vegetarianism. Oxford lists a total of 10 various titles under Tryon. Both books mentioned here are very rare items.

Title page and first page of the dedication backed with clear page tape without visual loss of text. Very nice early full mottled calf binding, raised bands with gilt lines, dark orange label with gilt lettering. With a nice aged patina. Very scarce to rare.
- John Evelyn (1620-1706) was a prolific writer and translator, touching on politics, manners, and religion as well as the more practical arts of architecture, painting and engraving, sculpture, numismatics, and perhaps what he is best known for (besides his diary) gardening and forestry. His most important original contributions are perhaps 'Sylva' which he composed at the behest of the Royal Society in 1664. Acetaria is but a chapter in 'Sylva' subtitled 'A Discourse of Sallets'. Part of Evelyn's literary knowledge of the garden were his translations of the French horticultural manual by Nicolas de Bonnefons and the garden poem (in Latin) by Renatus Rapinaus. Acetaria is certainly full of observations of how the English ways, either in the garden or at table, differed from French, Italian and Spanish - with occasional reference to India, Germany, Holland, Africa and America for good measure. The text also underscores the relative novelty of some aspects of the art of kitchen-gardening in England: we had much to learn by way of cultural techniques from the Dutch and the French, as well as plants that were of recent introduction, for example the Dutch cabbages brought over by Sir Anthony Ashley. His recipes for dressing salads is knowledgeable and interestingly not changed much in UK and Europe. Quite what Evelyn in his time, would have made of the myriad concoctions assembled to dress salads in America, and particularly in health obsessed California, one wonders. Due to the relative preparation of salads, where cooking is at a minimum, this book is quite ageless compared to other cookery books that mirror changing times.
